The Western Canada Surface Mine Rescue course is an intensive four-day training program designed to prepare emergency response teams for accidents and disasters at surface mining operations. The curriculum follows the Western Canada Mine Rescue Manual and covers essential rescue techniques, including rope rescue, fire suppression, and vehicle extrication. Successful completion is mandatory for workers assigned to a mine rescue team and is recognized across British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.

Incident Command System (ICS) and emergency scene management
Proper use and maintenance of breathing apparatus and gas detection equipment
Techniques for fighting fires on heavy mining equipment and structures
Vehicle extrication methods for trapping incidents involving light and heavy machinery
Rope rescue skills including knots, anchors, and lowering/raising systems
Search and rescue patterns and patient packaging for transport
Valid Government-issued photo identification
Current WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid (OFA Level 1) or higher certification (or equivalent)
Clean-shaven policy: Participants must be clean-shaven where the respirator facepiece seals to the face
Physical capability to perform strenuous rescue tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment
CSA-approved steel-toed safety boots and weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor exercises
How long is the Mine Rescue certificate valid? The Surface Mine Rescue certification typically remains valid for two to three years, but active team members are often required to attend regular practices and annual refresher training to maintain their operational status.
Is this course physically demanding? Yes, this is a highly physical course that involves lifting heavy hydraulic tools, carrying stretchers over uneven terrain, and working in simulated emergency environments, so a good level of fitness is required.
Do I need my own gear? While Upbeat First Aid provides the specialized rescue equipment (ropes, extrication tools, breathing apparatus), you are required to bring your own personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
Can I take this course without a First Aid ticket? No, a valid first aid certificate is a mandatory prerequisite because mine rescue training assumes you already possess the skills to treat patients once they are extricated.
Is lunch provided? Lunch is generally not provided during the training days, so participants should bring a packed lunch or plan to visit nearby food services during the break.
