Safe operation: Techniques for smooth driving, steering, and elevating, including driving at height (if applicable to the model).

Hazard assessment: Identifying overhead crush hazards, electrical lines, and ground depressions or debris.

Emergency procedures: executing emergency lowering from ground controls and platform rescue protocols.

Battery and fuel safety: Safe charging procedures for electric units and refueling for internal combustion models.

Valid Government-issued photo identification

Weather-appropriate clothing (if the practical evaluation is conducted outdoors)

Physical capability to climb into the platform and operate manual controls

Fall Protection Certificate: While not always a strict prerequisite for the class, holding a valid Fall Protection ticket is legally required by most employers to operate the machine on a job site and is highly recommended before taking this training.

How long is the certification valid? The Scissor Lift certification is valid for three years from the date of successful completion.

Does this course cover boom lifts? No, this specific course focuses only on scissor lifts (vertical lift); if you need to operate a boom lift (telescopic or articulating), you should register for the “Aerial Boom Lift” or the combined “MEWP” course.

Do I need a harness for a scissor lift? While WorkSafeBC regulations vary slightly depending on the specific site and equipment setup, most industrial sites and safety policies require operators to wear a full-body harness and lanyard while in any elevating work platform, including scissor lifts.

Is the training done on an actual machine? Yes, you must complete a practical evaluation on a functioning scissor lift to demonstrate your competency; you cannot get certified through theory alone.

Can I take this course if I don’t have a driver’s license? Yes, a standard driver’s license is not a strict requirement for the course, but you must be competent enough to learn the specific steering and control functions of the machinery.
